What fitness class is best?

Ahhh, it is confusing isn’t it? What is the right thing to do? Everyone in the health & wellbeing industry will have trained believing their way is the best way to support you… and in a way they’re right. Because really, the answer is movement & the key is finding a version that serves you; fun if you want fun, sweaty if you enjoy sweaty, team or solo, class or outside… It isn’t about creating complicated rules, getting caught in what you should & shouldn’t be doing, it’s about learning how to tune into your body. I know, you’ve heard it before but we don’t really know what it means. It means that at times pushing is ok - but no pain no gain doesn’t make any sense if you then dread doing it or injuring yourself.

Finding a healthy balance of moving fast, slow, strong & flexible is a good place to start - you might get that from a yoga or Pilates class, a jog outside & some at home stretches… Finding out what works for you, staying consistent in showing up. I know I need flexibility in my movement, some days I run, some days I want to cycle/climb/surf/sea swim/hike etc… so I may not be consistent in the same sport but I am in consistent in enjoying moving & finding out what works for me.

Yoga & Pilates (and our Barre!) classes are really popular because they tick so many boxes - community, consistency, strength, flexibility & your wellbeing. You can show up to a class and know that you are taking care of yourself in so many ways.

So I hope that reassures you next time you read an article of all the things you ‘should’ or shouldn’t be doing. Remember, people will always try & sell you what they believe is best but truly if you enjoy it, it raises your heatrate and gets you moving a few times a week then it is a great framework to support a healthy lifestyle.
